For Anyone Wondering About March 1st's Daily Feature...

Posted by NAveryW - March 1st, 2009

Yes, the "game" is more of a practical joke than an actual game. I felt like I'd want to have more Enthalpy-related games than just the two NWAs when I put the official website up (which I will shortly before releasing the first episode, which I absolutely must finish within the next couple of months).

I didn't want to spend a lot of time making something, though, since I want to devote most of my time and effort to finishing the first episode of Enthalpy. I scoured the Internet for inspiration; in other words, I played a porkload of Flash games. I went to every Flash game site I could think of: maxgames.com, armorgames.com, Newgrounds (of course), and nick.com.

Inspiration came to me after playing the Spongebob Squarepants game "Poop Deck Draw Down". I decided that I needed to make a card game. But I certainly didn't want to make it any old card game you could play anywhere. No, I wanted mine to be completely irrational, unpredictable, and utterly confusing to the player. Patterning the game loosely after Mario's FUNdamentals (specifically Go Fish), I wrote down how I wanted the gameplay to work. I quickly realized that this wouldn't turn out to be a "real" game, and wasn't sure at first whether or not I'd actually submit it to Newgrounds.

I eventually decided that I'd submit it to NG and not worry too much about the score, but that I would advertise it on my illogically popular Youtube Poop account of WalrusGuy (on YouTube, of course). Shortly after submitting the game to NG, I submitted an ephemeral video to YouTube with a link to the game, saying to vote five if you like it, and that it would be awesome if it got Daily Feature since that would be really confusing to players (and confusing people is hilarious). I set the video to private once I actually got Daily Feature, as I felt somewhat bad about promoting a non-YTP game I made on my YTP account. And there's the fact that people were almost certainly just voting five because I made it, not because of the quality of the game.

Mostly, I really do hope I led a lot of people who know me as WalrusGuy on YouTube to my Newgrounds account to see my more original work. Making Youtube Poops is fun, but I put way more effort into my original Flashes and they don't get nearly as much attention. While I'm not saying I'd prefer not to have all those subscribers I have on my YouTube account, I'd much rather be known for my original works that I put a lot of creativity and effort into than for my Youtube Poops.

I have to finish the first episode of Enthalpy soon. I must. I've been working on it off and on (mostly off) for way too long. And Enthalpy is supposed to be a series... I should only be spending a couple of months on each episode! I'm sure I could work much faster than I am...

lol you make a valid point there. the game wasn't much of a game and quality wasn't as great as many other works, yet the score was incredibly high. your other pieces are around the score of 4 though, which i don't think you advertised as walrusguy. interesting experiment: kinda fits in with that argument over high quality serious flashes vs. funny parodies with lower quality.

you rock nick

It's crazy, your game was so awesome, but it's dropped .40 points within 6 hours.

Don't sweat it, people do this on NG all the time, in fact I've done it twice by stealing daily awards with nonsensical pointless flash games, and better you than some god-awful video game parody enthralled egora... I mean egotistical maniac

When you say you must, do you mean it's for a class or is it just a mental deadline?

Also, you shouldn't have to feel the need to explain yourself on this. People make things like this all the time. Just look at Metal Gear Funnies. Your work is definitely more high quality than that, but you probably get what I'm saying.

Just a mental deadline.

Cards!

Hey, it's me, I love your vids, (especially on the other website) My friend goes crazy over your "Arthurs throbbing hit" vid. It is cool to see you on newgrounds.

Heh, I played NWA and later NWA2 when they first came out and I'm also a subscriber to your YTP channel. I had no idea those things were made by the same person. Pretty cool, actually.

I actually like seeing you on Newgrounds. It seems like your more comfortable with speaking, because no one really knows about your whereabouts here. I feel more comfortable about speaking with others on Newgrounds than on Youtube as well, but uploading things on Youtube is free. here, you have to work really hard on making something, only to find it gets blammed in the process. by the way, I'm Ferretfreak111 on Youtube =)

Man, i was about to get real pissed of at the game when i played it a second time, until I get the joke: there was no winning! XDD

The concept of mixing those tacky 50's clips with some weird randomness is really quite amazing, but you needed to make it a little longer(BTW, I laughed when the Snack break and dromple vids appeared).

It is quite a really amazing flash joke game. :D

here, have my two, take good care of it.

NO!

*rip*

also, i love your youtube poops, its been a while since you've made a news one.

but if any episodes of Enthalpy are as good as your poops, i'll love this.

holy crap! I'm a big fan of your flash and a HUGE fan of your YTP's (always been a fan of those) but I never realized that you were the same person. I idolize you.

Card Game! was hilarious! Even though you said on Youtube that it is a joke, I still played for fifteen minutes trying to find out if it does anything else!

NAveryW, I really love your nicholas' weird adventures and I'm sure I'll love Enthalpy too, and possibly even that one thing you were talking about... Erm... Are you still working on that prodject you're using that twilight hack for? Anyways, I really want to get flash and make games like that, but I have no money, and that program costs a pretty penny if you know what I mean. You may not get much publicity for your flashes, but I'll stick around no matter how many weeks, months, or st. patricks' days it takes, becuase I love your work and this stuff is a common interest for me. Keep on doing your thing and don't let anyone make you think you're not an inspiration.
Peace,

Hey Nick your new game sucks!! But its hilarious. I look forward to more of your work with these characters. The 2nd RPG was the reason I came back to NG and made an account.

Did Nicholas always have a mustache in the game?

It wasn't exactly the first of its kind. Play "Super Crossover Bros. v2". It's very similar, and it was made in 2007.

i didnt read your post :3
